In my day job at videofactory, I basically have everything a YouTuber could wish for. Or do I? You’ll rarely see me using SMaker3D in my studio, and even then I usually just use the backdrop. Anyone interested is welcome to pop over to videofactory.club.
My kit
For SMaker3D, however, I use my own set-up of tools, which is much more portable and fits into a small rucksack. And when you look at the list, just bear in mind that, as a former photography enthusiast, I sometimes look too high up on the shelf – but it would work just as well further down ;-)
My rucksack
My tripod on my rucksack
For when I’m out and about, I have a stripped-down Manfrotto Befree tripod with quick-release clamps. The tripod has really proved its worth thanks to its balance of portability, stability and functionality. However, I’ve screwed on a very lightweight ball head with an Arca quick-release system to further reduce weight and space.
The ball head is particularly useful when you want to quickly set a fixed position. In the studio, on the other hand, I use a video head.
My quick-release system
This is probably the most common universal format for photographers and, in this case, I also use it on my camera for video because of its compactness. Ultimately, with lightweight cameras, it makes no real difference. I’ve been using the Mengs parts from Amazon for many years now; they’re sturdy and I’ve got no complaints.
My microphone
Whilst I use expensive Sennheiser AVX wireless microphones in the studio, when I’m on the move I take the new DJI Mic combo with me. It’s the ultimate tool for on the go and so good and affordable that it would be a great replacement in the studio.
My lenses
Whilst I pretty much always have a fixed setup in the studio, when I’m out and about I use the lenses from my personal photography kit. They’re simply worlds better, but unfortunately also considerably more expensive.
Sony SEL2470 GM – For the undecided generalist
Sony SEL1635 GM – For shooting in tight spaces
Sony SEL70200 GM – My favourite for family and portraits
Sony SEL90 MG – Macro shots, portraits or product photography
My cameras
What can I say? I haven’t quite found the right camera yet.
